Extension of Two Months for Filing Malaysia Income Tax 2020
The Government has announced an extension of two months for filing income tax from the original deadline in consideration of the Movement Restriction Order (MRO) that has been enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new deadline for filing income tax returns in Malaysia is now 30 June 2020 for resident individuals who do not carry on a business and 30 August 2020 for resident individuals who do carry on a business.
This comes as welcome news as the country’s lockdown has affected millions of Malaysians with most businesses closed temporarily and the workforce adjusts through measures such as working from home, keeping in touch through online communication channels, and relying more on online shopping and food delivery.
Taxpayers Strongly Encouraged to Use Online Services
The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia, otherwise known as Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri Malaysia (LHDN), has announced the closure of all physical branches from 18 to 31 March to comply with the Restricted Movement Order period. The Restricted Movement Order is now extended until 14 April 2020.
This has led to an encouraged use of online services on the LHDN website where taxpayers can file taxes and make necessary tax payments through the ezHasiL and e-Filing system.
Additionally, taxpayers will be allowed to:
- Request first-time e-Filing PIN via telephone
- Fill an official online feedback form to make enquiries
- Reset their password through a registered email address or phone number
- Submit their forms via the m-Filing mobile application, which is accessible on smartphones and tablets (only applies to resident individuals who do not own a business)
