Social Security Organisation (SOCSO)

Social Security Organisation (SOCSO)The Social Security Organisation (SOCSO), known in Malay as Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial (PERKESO), is a statutory body in Malaysia. Established in 1971, it provides social security protection for employees under the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 and the Employment Insurance System Act 2017. SOCSO operates under the Ministry of Human Resources.

The organisation’s main role is to manage social security schemes that protect workers against workplace injuries, occupational diseases, invalidity, and unemployment. These schemes include the Employment Injury Scheme, Invalidity Pension Scheme, and Employment Insurance System, ensuring comprehensive support for employees and their dependents.

Employers are required to contribute to SOCSO on behalf of their employees, based on the employees’ wages. These contributions fund benefits such as medical treatment, temporary disability allowances, permanent disability payments, and pensions for dependents in the event of a worker’s death.

SOCSO also offers rehabilitation services to help injured or disabled workers regain employment. Additionally, it conducts workplace safety awareness campaigns and inspections to prevent accidents.

Through its services, SOCSO plays a critical role in enhancing Malaysia’s social protection framework, providing financial and medical support to employees while promoting safe and healthy work environments.
