Understanding Permanent Resident (PR)

Permanent Resident (PR)Permanent Residence (PR) in Malaysia offers a long-term residency visa to individuals seeking to live in the country permanently, providing a status close to that of a Malaysian citizen, yet allowing them to retain their original nationality. This status is valid for up to 20 years, offering stable and secure living conditions.

Benefits of PR Status

PR holders enjoy a myriad of privileges similar to Malaysian citizens, including an indefinite stay without the need for visa renewals, the ability to work without a separate work permit, the freedom to buy property, access to education and healthcare at local rates, and eligibility for social security benefits. Additionally, PR status allows for family sponsorship for long-term visas and the opportunity to start a business in Malaysia. However, it does not grant the right to vote or participate in political activities.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for Malaysian PR is based on contributions to the country’s economy and society, with categories for investors, experts, professionals, and those with Malaysian family ties. Investors must demonstrate significant financial investment, such as a fixed deposit in a Malaysian bank.

Experts and professionals are required to show exceptional skills or experience, with recommendations from relevant Malaysian authorities. Those married to Malaysian citizens or with Malaysian children may also apply, subject to living in Malaysia under a long-term pass.

Application Process

The application involves submitting detailed documentation to the Immigration Department, including an application form, passport photocopies, and evidence of eligibility. The process includes an interview and a background check, leading to the issuance of the PR visa upon approval.

MM2H vs PR

The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme offers another residency option, valid for 5 years and renewable, allowing a more extended stay compared to typical visas but not providing the same level of benefits as PR. Unlike PR, MM2H primarily involves financial eligibility without requiring the extensive integration into Malaysian society or economy that PR demands.
