Penang Secures Approval for International Logistics Aeropark, Earthworks Begin
Penang has approved the masterplan for the Penang International Logistics Aeropark (PILA), a major project designed to strengthen the state’s logistics network.
The development is a joint venture between Penang Development Corporation and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad. It will include a new cargo terminal to improve logistics services across northern Malaysia.
Earthworks and soil treatment have already started, with the first phase of the air cargo warehouse expected to be completed by 2029. This first stage is projected to handle an extra 100,000 tonnes of cargo each year.
Once fully completed, the project will offer more than two million square feet of warehouse space and could support up to 500,000 tonnes of cargo annually by 2050, making it a major boost for the region’s logistics capacity.
Officials said the aeropark has already attracted interest from international logistics companies and local businesses. The project is expected to support industries such as semiconductors and electronics, which rely on faster and more efficient cargo movement.
The new aeropark also supports Penang’s long-term economic plans and the expansion of Penang International Airport, helping position the state as a stronger regional logistics hub.
